When experiencing pain, a common question arises as to which is better, cold or heat? The answer really depends on the type of injury you have and it is best to check with your health practitioner, but there are some general rules you can follow:

Especially in the first 3 days of an injury, ice to decrease inflammation, swelling, bruising and pain. Ice constricts blood vessels, thus temporarily reducing blood flow, calming inflammation and managing the pain.

Tight muscles: Heat is great when you need to loosen things up, not only does it feel soothing, but heat also helps to relax stiff muscles and increase blood flow.

When in doubt, ICE!!

Pain is produced by the body as part of an overall plan for survival. Pain is nature’s burglar alarm. When it sounds it means that something is trying to steal your health and is tampering with your correct body functioning. It means that you had better start doing something to stop that theft! Destroying the pain through the use of sedatives or analgesics makes as much sense as turning of a burglar alarm in the belief that the act will stop the burglary.

Pain is produced to make you act to correct the cause of the pain. So listen to your body! Listen to the pain! Respond to the alarm! Take proper action to fix the issue that is causing you this pain to help turn off your alarm and enhance your health. Chiropractic and massage will help treat many of the issues that often result in the pain, and practitioners can help you pinpoint the cause of the problem, instead of treating or masking the symptoms. Listen to your body and take proper action to relieve the pain.

Abdominals get all the credit for protecting the back and being the foundation of strength, but they are only a small part of what makes up the core. The core includes muscles on the front, side and back of the torso, between the shoulders and hips. Weak and unbalanced core muscles are linked to low back pain. They result in a loss of the appropriate lumbar curve and decreased spinal stability. Stronger, balanced core muscles help maintain appropriate posture and reduce strain on the areas vulnerable to injuries. The biggest benefit of core training is to develop functional fitness – fitness that is essential to both daily living and regular activities. For more information on core training or for a functional strength assesment contact Dr. Rebecca Blackburn.

Osteopaths use their palpatory skill to identify areas of the body that are restricted (not moving normally) or constricted (strangled or squeezed). These areas can be in any of these systems: musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive and nervous.

Osteopaths identify and then correct or normalize the restrictions or constrictions so the body can function optimally.

Manual osteopathy is based on 4 basic principles:

1) Each structure in the body supports the body’s functions. If a structure is damaged, out of place, or otherwise not working properly, the body will not function at its best.

2) The natural flow of the body’s fluids – lymphatic, vascular, and neurological – must be preserved and maintained.

3) The human body is the sum of its parts. Its physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive systems don’t work independently; they work in harmony.

4) When the body has no restrictions, it has the inherent ability to heal itself. Osteopaths recognize that a patient is an integrated whole. When all the body’s components are in balance, a person is complete and in total health.

If you have any questions or are interested in learning more about this therapy offered at WNCM, please contact our resident osteopath, Nick Cipp, at wncm@rogers.com or call the office to leave message.

From a very early age our dogs are bouncing, running, tumbling, so it makes sense to get everything in working order, before minor issues develop into major ones when they are older.

Puppies benefit from periodic chiropractic to correct the fixations and subluxations caused by rowdy play with other animals, the inevitable slips and falls that occur as they develop coordination, and learning proper leash behaviour.

Early chiropractic care to maintain proper joint mobility can lessen the likelihood that puppy mishaps will lead to flexibility problems later in life. Evidence suggests that puppies receiving regular adjustments are less likely to be diagnosed with hip dysplasia when compared to litter mates who received no adjustments.
